Department of Nature & Health

"Being in nature is not only inspiring, it also has medical and psychotherapeutic potential. By experiencing nature, we place our body in the original functional circle made of humans and the environment from which we emerged. We put two matching puzzle pieces together – us and nature into one whole.”" -Clemens G. Arvay

Importance
Health is one of the basic and irreplaceable needs of human beings. Man is a part of nature and needs nature before the birth to the death. Many of our diseases are due to the distance and separation from nature, and our naturalistic nature. To be in perfect health, we need to be with nature and by its side. Studies show that the more access a person has to green areas, the better physical and mental health will be. With the onset of urbanization and human distance from the green and pristine areas of nature, new diseases, such as asthma and inflammatory bowel disease, slowly emerged and spread among people in urban communities. People in urban areas are facing with various contaminants, including air pollutants, consuming fast foods and unhealthy foods, lacking exposure to beneficial microbes in natural environment and soil, i.e., our old friends microbes, and having less exposure to sunlight. These show the danger of urban and machine-like life today. On the other hand, we know that nature has always provided us with many benefits/services in the area of health and treatment of diseases, and human beings have identified and applied some of them over time. We, in this department, are planning to get training and guidance from Mother Nature to solve our big problems in the area of health, and find a way to have a better and healthier life.

Aims and Missions
With the help of nature, we strive to maintain and improve mental and physical health of human communities, and find effective ways from the heart of nature to treat patients. Our main goals include (I) maintaining/improving health and preventing diseases, (II) treatment of diseases, and (III) rehabilitation of patients. Common to all of these aims is getting help from nature. To achieve these goals, research and activities must be done in various fields. These areas are very broad and there is no time to explain them all here. Just to get more familiar, we will mention a few examples of our great missions in this department. (1) Healthy Food, Healthy People: having a healthy diet is one of the most important foundations for maintaining and promoting health in a family. Moreover, providing healthy complementary foods are crucial to infants, children and the elderly. (2) Healthy Toys, Happy & Healthy Kids: our children deal with their toys a lot on a daily basis. Producing or improving healthy raw materials is very important for making children's toys. (3) Healthy Beauty Products, Sustainable Beauty: today’s consumption of health and beauty products has increased dramatically, in which many synthetic and chemical substances are often utilized. Daily contact with these substances may cause some diseases. (4) Natural Medicine, Sustainable Health: chemical drugs used are often like a double-edged sword; side effects are an integral part of chemical drugs. Herbal and natural medicines with no or fewer side effects could be an alternative to chemical drugs. Finding new therapies from the heart of nature for incurable diseases and rehabilitation can be promising for many patients around the world.
